Carlos adoptive Mom, Bea Long did mission work for 17 years in Honduras through CURE International, and assisted in building a hospital there. The CURE International Organization provides help for children with specific disabilities in underserved countries. In 2003, she met and cared for Carlos at the orphanage of the village in which she served. He was 5 months old.
Due to the severity of his OI, Carlos was not expected to live past 2 years of age with the limited specialized medical care available. Bea and her husband Jim could not see depriving Carlos of the helping care he needed and began the process of adoption to bring him back to the U.S.
In his young life, Carlos has undergone 9 major operations, most recently in 2018 to add 2 rods to his back for support. The operation was certainly painful and thankfully a success!
