History

Carlos adoptive Mom, Bea Long did mission work for 17 years in Honduras through CURE International, and assisted in building a hospital there.  The CURE International Organization provides help for children with specific disabilities in underserved countries.  In 2003, she met and cared for Carlos at the orphanage of the village in which she served.  He was 5 months old.

Due to the severity of his OI, Carlos was not expected to live past 2 years of age with the limited specialized medical care available.  Bea and her husband Jim could not see depriving Carlos of the helping care he needed and began the process of adoption to bring him back to the U.S.

In his young life, Carlos has undergone 9 major operations, most recently in 2018 to add 2 rods to his back for support.  The operation was certainly painful and thankfully a success!

Our Friend Carlos

Carlos is a smart, funny 15 year old and a student at Annville-Cleona Middle School.  He enjoys art and movies.  Though he is about as sure as any 15 year old about his choice of career, he is considering architecture or engineering.

Carlos also enjoys being a Boy Scout with Annville Cleona Troop 440 where he has so far earned the First Class Rank.  He also serves at Boy Scout Camp Bashore as a Counselor in Training.  Carlos also helps serve mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Annville.
